MANUAL SOIL BLOCK PRESS MACHINES

Stabilized Soil Blocks(SSBs) are made when a mixture of soil and cement are compressed. Any type of soil is usable except black cotton soil, which expands and shrinks irregularly with moisture administration. The mixture, by composition, is approximately 5% cement against 95% soil. Water content is minimal but experimental as some soils would have moisture initially after excavation. A proper training program offered by Makiga takes care of this.

The soil blocks made from the Makiga Stabilized Soil Block(SSB) machines are of high quality, uniform in size and shape with defined edges and smooth surfaces, making construction faster and easier. Minimum walling area per day would be about 40 square meters. With proper curing, the blocks attain a dry compressive strength of 2.5 N/mm2 and a maximum wet compressive strength of 1.5 N/mm2. This feature makes the blocks waterproof as no air spaces are left in the block ensuring that the final structure withstands tests of time. The maximum block moisture absorption is 15%.  When building, blocks are dry-stacked and interlock on the four (4) sides in contact with each other. In essence, during wall construction, 80% of joinery mortar is eliminated, making walling costs to drastically be lowered by approximately 50%. Since the blocks produced are smooth and uniform, material for plaster on the wall is also drastically reduced.

SSBs are quite ideal for any kind of structure- Bungalows, maisonettes, perimeter walls, learning institutions, community houses, apartments, clinics, social halls, community centers and office buildings. A fundamental element of this technology is that it is environmentally friendly as SSBs are ‘cured’ and NOT fired. 3.Cement to Soil ratio.

 

This will vary according to soil type and should be determined by testing the soil for shrinkage.  This can be done quickly and easily using a special shrinkage box supplied with the Block Press.  Please note that heavily clay soils, where shrinkage exceeds 40mm, the soil may require further stabilization with sand.
